We are in the midst of the largest migration in human history. For the last 50 years more than 1.3 million people have moved to cities every week somewhere in the world. Most developed nations are already three-quarters urbanized and developing nations are catching up rapidly. The significance of these statistics goes far beyond a mere change of address and increased traffic congestion. Urbanization at this accelerated pace is changing cultures, traditions, ways of life, and so much more. In short, it is changing the way people see themselves, other people, and the world around them. Without knowing it we are changing and at the same time we have not adapted to these changes. While urbanization ushers many opportunities (i.e. economic, technological, job specialization), there are many challenges that accompany this unprecedented movement of people.
RADIUS Initiatives provides a community of reflective Christians who see these drastic cultural shifts and want to guide others in adapting to our new urban world so that our cities might flourish. We are creating space for conversation, research, and action.
A good counselor understands that a person undergoing a major transition must navigate through several steps of adjustment in order to thrive. A major cultural/societal transition (like this one) requires a similar process of adjustment. The first step in this process is to recognize these changes and talk openly about the implications of urbanization on our families, our faith communities, and our cities as a whole.
